How to Use Shopify Metafields to Customise Your Store

What Are Shopify Metafields?

Metafields are custom data fields you can attach to Shopify objects — products, variants, collections, customers, orders, pages, and blogs. They let you store structured extra information that doesn’t fit into Shopify’s default fields.

Before native metafields existed, storing custom product data required either coding it into product descriptions (messy) or using third-party apps. Now Shopify supports metafields natively, with a clean admin interface and direct connection to your theme.

What Can You Store in Metafields?

Metafields support multiple content types:

• Single-line text — Short labels, badges, codes
• Multi-line text — Longer descriptions, instructions, care guides
• Rich text — Formatted text with bold, lists, links
• Number — Integer or decimal values (e.g., weight in kg, volume in ml)
• Date / date+time — For events, expiry dates, harvest dates
• True/False (boolean) — On/off flags (e.g., is this product vegan?)
• JSON — Complex structured data
• File reference — Images, PDFs (for size guides, certificates, instructions)
• Product/Collection/Page reference — Link to other Shopify objects
• Rating — Star rating field
• Measurement — Dimensions, volumes, weights with units
• Colour — Hex colour values for dynamic styling

Common Metafield Use Cases

Product-Level

• Ingredients list — For food, supplements, or beauty products
• Care instructions — Washing, maintenance, storage
• Size guide — Link to a size guide PDF or show inline measurements
• Custom badge — “Bestseller”, “New Arrival”, “Limited Edition” (as a text or boolean field)
• Specifications — Technical specs for electronics or tools
• Origin/sourcing story — For artisan, organic, or fair-trade products
• Warranty period — In months or years
• Related blog post — Link to a how-to article about the product

Collection-Level

• Hero banner image — Custom banner per collection rather than using the default collection image
• Category description — Longer SEO-focused description shown below the product grid
• Buyer’s guide link — Link to a related blog post for that category
• Seasonal label — “Summer 2026 Collection”

Customer-Level

• Wholesale tier — “tier-1”, “distributor” for B2B pricing
• Birthday — For birthday discount automation
• VIP status — Boolean flag for loyalty tier

Setting Up Metafields: Step by Step

• Step 1: Go to Shopify Admin > Settings > Custom Data
• Step 2: Choose your object type (Products, Collections, Customers, etc.)
• Step 3: Click “Add definition” and name your metafield (e.g., “ingredients_list”)
• Step 4: Choose the content type (multi-line text, file, number, etc.)
• Step 5: Save the definition
• Step 6: Open any product in your admin — you’ll now see the metafield at the bottom of the page to fill in

Connecting Metafields to Your Theme (No Code)

On OS 2.0 themes, you can connect metafields to your theme visually:

• Open the theme editor and navigate to a product page template
• Add a text block, image block, or content block to the template
• Click the data source icon (looks like a database) next to the content field
• Select “Connect to metafield” and choose your metafield
• The block now dynamically pulls that metafield value for each product

This means you set up the template once, then fill in metafields per product in the admin — no code required, no theme editor work for each individual product.

Bulk Filling Metafields

For stores with hundreds of products, filling metafields one by one is impractical. Options:

• Shopify’s bulk editor — Products > select multiple > bulk edit — now supports metafield editing
• Matrixify (Excelify) — Excel/CSV bulk import including metafields
• Metafields Guru — Dedicated metafields management app with bulk editing
• Shopify API — For technical teams, REST or GraphQL API to batch-update metafields programmatically

Metafields are one of the most powerful underused features in Shopify. Most store owners doing bespoke product customisation (ingredients, specs, custom content) are still either cramming everything into the description or paying for apps that replicate what native metafields do for free.
