Why Multilingual Shopify Stores Drive Incremental Revenue
A translated store converts 72% better in non-English markets compared to an English-only store shown to non-English speakers, according to CSA Research. For Shopify stores selling into France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, or any Arabic or Asian market, localisation is not optional — it is the difference between a bounce rate above 80% and a functioning sales channel. The technical setup for multilingual Shopify has become significantly simpler since Shopify introduced Translate and Adapt.
Shopify Translate and Adapt (Free App)
Install Shopify Translate and Adapt from the App Store. Add a target language (e.g. French). The app shows your English content alongside empty fields for the translated version. You can: fill translations manually (most accurate), use the built-in auto-translate feature (powered by Google Translate — suitable for a first pass, requires human review), or export content to a CSV for professional translation and reimport.
All storefront content is translatable: product titles, descriptions, collection names, pages, navigation, checkout (where Shopify allows), email templates, and app content where apps support Shopify’s translation API.
URL Structure for Multilingual SEO
Shopify creates language-prefixed URLs for translated stores: yourstore.com/en-gb/ (English UK), yourstore.com/fr/ (French), yourstore.com/de/ (German). This subfolder structure is preferred over subdomain (fr.yourstore.com) for SEO because it shares domain authority. Shopify automatically adds hreflang tags to indicate the relationship between language versions to search engines, which prevents duplicate content penalties.
Language Selector on Storefront
Add a language selector to your header and footer using the native Shopify theme section for language switchers. Most themes include this; if not, add the Liquid code to your navigation template. The language selector should be visible on every page — customers who encounter a language barrier abandon immediately, so make switching easy.
Consider auto-detecting browser language and showing the appropriate version by default — but always offer a manual override. Forcing a language on a customer who wants English is frustrating; suggesting the most likely language with a visible switch is helpful.
Third-Party Translation Apps
For stores requiring more advanced translation management, LangShop, Weglot, and GTranslate offer additional features: professional translator ordering, translation memory (reuse translations of repeated phrases), glossary management for brand-specific terms, and visual translation editors that show translated text in context. Weglot is popular for its ease of setup and quality of auto-translation for European languages.
What Cannot Be Translated Natively
Shopify’s native translation does not cover: checkout text in all languages (limited to Shopify Plus via Checkout Extensibility), third-party app UI that does not support Shopify’s translation API, email template content in some email providers, and custom theme JavaScript that contains hardcoded strings. Audit these gaps before launching in a new language market — a translated product page with an English checkout is better than nothing but still creates friction.
