The Problem with Most Shopify Pop-Ups
Pop-ups work. The data is clear — a well-configured email capture pop-up converts 3–8% of visitors into email subscribers. But most Shopify stores deploy them poorly: full-screen on page load, 2 seconds after arrival, on mobile, with a 10% discount offer that reduces margin without qualifying intent.
Done wrong, pop-ups increase bounce rate, destroy first impressions, and get dismissed before the visitor sees your homepage. Done right, they’re one of the highest-ROI tools in your Shopify marketing stack.
The Timing Rules
Delay the Initial Pop-Up
Don’t show a pop-up the moment someone lands on your site. They haven’t seen your products yet. They have no context for why your brand is worth their email address. Wait until they’ve had a chance to browse.
Recommended timing: show after 30–60 seconds on site, OR after scrolling 40–50% of the page, OR after visiting 2+ pages. These triggers mean the visitor is engaged — they’re worth targeting.
Exit-Intent Pop-Ups
Show a pop-up when the visitor is about to leave — mouse moving toward the browser close button on desktop. This is the highest-converting trigger because you have nothing to lose (they’re leaving anyway) and the visitor has already seen your store, so the offer is contextual.
Exit-intent pop-ups on desktop convert at 4–12%. On mobile, use scroll-down exit intent (user scrolls back toward the top of the page, indicating they’re about to leave).
The Offer Rules
Make the Offer Specific
“Join our newsletter” converts at 0.5–1%. “Get 15% off your first order” converts at 3–7%. “Get the complete Skincare Starter Guide + 15% off” converts at 5–10%.
A specific, valuable offer dramatically outperforms a generic subscription ask. Test different offers: percentage discounts, free shipping, free gift, early access, exclusive content, or a lead magnet relevant to your category.
The Discount Trap
Percentage discounts work but train customers to wait for discounts. Consider alternatives that don’t reduce margin: free shipping thresholds, a free sample, early access to new products, or a valuable piece of content (e.g., “Download our 5-Step Skincare Routine guide”).
If you use discounts, make them defensible: your pop-up discount should be the same or slightly better than what you offer elsewhere. If new subscribers see a 15% pop-up and then find a 20% code on a deal site, you’ve devalued the urgency of the pop-up offer.
The Targeting Rules
- Suppress for existing subscribers — Never show a sign-up pop-up to someone already on your list. Your email platform can suppress via cookie.
- Suppress for recent buyers — Someone who just purchased doesn’t need a first-order discount pop-up. Configure purchase-based suppression in your pop-up app.
- Show different pop-ups by page type — A visitor on a product page for running shoes might respond better to a running-specific offer than a generic store-wide discount.
- Suppress on checkout pages — Never show a pop-up during checkout. It breaks focus at the critical conversion moment.
Mobile-Specific Rules
Google penalises intrusive interstitials on mobile — pop-ups that cover the main content immediately after a mobile user lands from search results. This is an explicit ranking factor.
Safe mobile approaches:
- Slide-in banners — A banner from the bottom of the screen that doesn’t cover content
- Delayed full-screen — Only trigger on mobile after 60+ seconds and significant scroll depth
- Sticky bottom bar — Persistent but non-intrusive email capture at the bottom of mobile screens
Design Rules
- Clear close button — Visible X in the corner. Don’t hide it. Users who can’t close a pop-up easily leave the site.
- One CTA only — One email field, one button. Don’t ask for name, email, phone, and birthday simultaneously.
- Mobile-sized text and buttons — Minimum 16px text, buttons at least 44px tall for touch targets.
- On-brand design — Your pop-up should look like it belongs to your store, not like a generic template. Match your fonts and colours.
Recommended Apps
- Klaviyo — If you’re already using Klaviyo for email, use their native pop-up builder. Seamlessly integrates with your lists and flows.
- Privy — Long-established, easy to use, solid targeting options. Free plan available.
- Omnisend — Good for email + SMS capture simultaneously.
- OptiMonk — More advanced personalisation and targeting rules if you want fine-grained control.
A well-configured pop-up adding 500 new email subscribers per month, converting at 5% email-to-purchase, at an AOV of £50, generates an additional £1,250/month in trackable email revenue. That’s why this is worth getting right.
