Your First Sale Is the Beginning, Not the End
Acquiring a new customer costs 5–7x more than retaining an existing one. Yet most Shopify stores invest everything in getting the first sale and almost nothing in what happens after. A well-designed post-purchase email flow changes that ratio dramatically — turning one-time buyers into loyal customers who buy again and refer their friends.
Here’s the 6-email post-purchase sequence that top Shopify stores use to maximise customer lifetime value.
Email 1: Order Confirmation (Immediate)
This is the most-opened email you’ll ever send — open rates of 70–80% are common. Don’t just send a receipt. Use this email to:
- Confirm the order details with a summary
- Set expectations: “Your order will ship within 2 business days”
- Introduce your customer support channel
- Add a “you might also like” product recommendation section (non-pushy, just helpful)
- Express genuine thanks — a personal note from the founder converts better than corporate boilerplate
Email 2: Shipping Confirmation (When Dispatched)
Triggered automatically when the order ships. Include the tracking link prominently — this reduces “where is my order?” support tickets significantly. Use this email to build anticipation: “Your [Product] is on its way! Here’s how to get the most from it when it arrives.”
Email 3: Delivery Confirmation + Usage Tips (1–2 Days After Delivery)
This email is underused and highly effective. Send it 1–2 days after estimated delivery with:
- A “how to get the most from your [product]” guide
- Video tutorials or setup instructions if applicable
- Care and maintenance tips
- Common beginner mistakes to avoid
This email reduces returns (customers who understand the product are less likely to be disappointed) and builds genuine goodwill. It says “we care about your experience, not just your money.”
Email 4: Review Request (7–10 Days After Delivery)
By now the customer has had time to experience the product. Ask for a review. Keep it simple and make the link direct to your review platform (Loox, Okendo, Judge.me, or Google). Subject line: “How is your [Product Name]?” — open-ended, conversational, low-pressure.
Tip: Offer a small incentive for leaving a review (loyalty points, a small discount) — review rates jump 2–3x with a modest incentive.
Email 5: Cross-Sell Recommendations (14–21 Days After Purchase)
Based on what they bought, recommend complementary products. A customer who bought a yoga mat might need a yoga block, strap, or carry bag. Personalise this with Klaviyo’s product recommendation engine or manually curate cross-sells by product category.
Subject line: “Complete your [activity/look/kit] — products that pair perfectly with your [Product]”
Email 6: Loyalty / Referral Invitation (30 Days After Purchase)
Invite satisfied customers to join your loyalty programme or refer a friend. If you have a points system, show them their current balance. If you have a referral programme, frame the benefit to both referrer and referee: “Give your friend 10% off, get 10% off your next order.”
Measuring Post-Purchase Flow Success
- Repeat purchase rate — what % of first-time buyers make a second purchase within 90 days
- Review conversion rate — % of email 4 recipients who leave a review
- Cross-sell revenue — revenue attributed to email 5
- Referral rate — new customers acquired through email 6
