Why Product Titles Are Doing Double Duty
Your Shopify product title appears in three critical places: the browser tab, Google search results, and the product page itself. It needs to do two completely different jobs simultaneously — tell Google what the page is about (SEO), and convince a human to click or buy (conversion).
Most store owners sacrifice one for the other. Keyword-stuffed titles like “Men Organic Cotton T-Shirt Navy Blue Breathable Casual Summer Slim Fit” rank okay but read like spam. Generic titles like “Classic Tee” tell Google nothing. The goal is a title that does both.
The Product Title Formula
A strong Shopify product title follows this structure:
[Brand (optional)] + [Primary Keyword] + [Key Differentiator] + [Variant Attribute (if relevant)]
Examples:
- “Organic Cotton T-Shirt – Men’s Slim Fit | Navy”
- “Lavender Essential Oil – 100% Pure, 50ml”
- “Stainless Steel Water Bottle – 1L, Leak-Proof, Matte Black”
- “Merino Wool Crew Neck Jumper – Women’s”
- “Dog Harness No-Pull – Medium, Reflective Safety Straps”
Notice what these titles do: the primary keyword comes first (important for SEO), followed by a differentiator that answers “why this one?” (important for conversion). Variant information (colour, size) follows at the end — Google pulls this from Shopify’s variant structure, but having it in the title helps for long-tail searches.
SEO Rules for Product Titles
- Primary keyword in the first 60 characters — Google truncates titles in search results around 60 characters. Put the keyword near the start.
- Match search intent — Search what people actually type for your product. “Running shoes” vs “jogging trainers” — check Google Suggest and your GSC data.
- Don’t keyword-stuff — Google penalises titles that read like keyword lists. One primary keyword, one secondary at most.
- Include brand name only if it adds value — For branded searches and established brands, yes. For generic products, skip it and use the characters for descriptive content instead.
- Avoid duplicate titles across products — Every product needs a unique title. Duplicates split SEO value and confuse Google about which page to rank.
Conversion Rules for Product Titles
- Lead with the benefit or key feature — “Waterproof Hiking Boots” tells the buyer instantly what makes these worth clicking over regular boots.
- Use natural language — Customers search conversationally. “Best Coffee for Cold Brew” works better than “Cold Brew Coffee Grounds Specialty Grade Premium”.
- Highlight what makes it different — “Organic”, “Handmade”, “UK-Made”, “100% Merino” — these are buying signals that justify price and build desire.
- Include size/variant in titles for high-search variants — If you sell large and small sizes and customers often search by size, include it: “XL Dog Crate – Heavy Duty, Foldable”.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using internal SKU codes in titles — “SKU-JKT-009 Jacket Blue” means nothing to Google or customers. Clean these up immediately.
- Starting every title with your brand name — Unless you’re Nike, your brand name at the start of every title wastes valuable space and all your titles look the same in search results.
- Generic titles inherited from suppliers — Dropshipping stores and wholesalers often import product titles wholesale. Rewrite every one — duplicate content from supplier catalogues hurts SEO significantly.
- Ignoring mobile truncation — On mobile, Google shows even fewer characters. Test how your title looks at 50 characters.
- Not matching the H1 — Your product title becomes the H1 on the page by default. If you’ve overridden the H1 separately, ensure they’re consistent. Conflicting page titles and H1s confuse Google’s topic understanding.
Bulk Updating Product Titles
If you have hundreds of products with poor titles, bulk CSV export from Products > Export in Shopify admin. Edit titles in Google Sheets, then re-import via Products > Import. Far faster than editing one by one.
For stores with thousands of products, consider a specialist tool like DataSpark, Metafields Guru, or a custom script to batch-update titles following your naming convention.
One systematic pass through your product titles — applying the formula above — typically produces a 10–25% increase in organic product page traffic within 3–6 months, without any link building or additional content creation.
