Retargeting: Your Highest-ROI Paid Channel
Retargeting (or remarketing) serves ads specifically to people who have already visited your store. These audiences convert at 2–5x the rate of cold audiences because they already know your brand. CPCs are typically lower than prospecting campaigns. For most Shopify stores, retargeting delivers the highest ROAS of any paid channel — yet it’s often set up poorly or neglected entirely. A properly structured retargeting system can recover 5–10% of abandoning visitors.
Retargeting Audience Segments
- Checkout abandoners (7 days) — highest intent, should see strongest offer (free shipping, discount). Highest converting retargeting segment
- Cart abandoners (14 days) — high intent, serve product-specific ads with social proof
- Product page viewers (30 days) — showed interest in specific product. Serve dynamic ads with that product
- Collection page viewers (30 days) — browsed a category. Serve best-sellers from that category
- All website visitors (60 days) — broad retargeting. Use brand awareness and bestseller messaging
- Past purchasers (180 days) — cross-sell or replenishment retargeting
Meta Dynamic Retargeting
Meta’s Catalogue Sales objective with dynamic product ads automatically shows each visitor the exact products they viewed on your store. Setup: connect your Shopify product catalogue to Meta Business Manager, create a Catalogue Sales campaign, select “Retargeting” audience → “People who visited your website or app.” Meta matches the website visit events to products in your catalogue and shows personalised ads automatically. This is the highest-performing retargeting setup for product-focused stores.
Frequency Management
Retargeting ads become annoying when shown too many times. Set frequency caps: no more than 4 impressions per week per person. After frequency reaches 6–8 lifetime impressions with no conversion, the person is unlikely to convert from this campaign — suppress them to avoid wasted spend and brand annoyance. Refresh creative every 3–4 weeks to maintain engagement even within frequency caps.
Google Display Retargeting
Google Display Network (GDN) retargeting shows banner ads to past visitors across 2 million+ websites and apps. Lower CPCs than Meta retargeting but also lower intent. Best used as reinforcement — keeping your brand visible to warm audiences — rather than as primary conversion driver. Use responsive display ads (upload multiple headlines, descriptions, and images; Google assembles combinations automatically) to maximise creative testing without manual effort.
