Why Collection Pages Are the Most Valuable SEO Asset on Shopify
Most Shopify stores invest their SEO effort in product pages and blog posts. Collection pages — the category pages that list multiple products — are almost universally neglected. This is a significant mistake.
Collection pages rank for high-intent, high-volume keywords (“men’s running shoes”, “organic skincare sets”, “leather wallets UK”) that individual product pages never will. These category-level searches have massive traffic and strong commercial intent. A well-optimised collection page ranking on page 1 for one of these terms can drive more revenue than 20 product pages combined.
The Typical State of Collection Page SEO
Most Shopify collection pages have:
- Auto-generated title tag: “[Collection Name] – Store Name”
- Empty meta description
- No description text above or below the product grid
- Default image (or none)
- No internal links to or from other collection pages
This is an empty page from Google’s perspective. It has products, but no text content, no optimised title, no meta description. Google doesn’t have enough information to decide when to rank it and for what query.
Step 1: Keyword Research for Collections
Before writing any collection description, research the keyword landscape. For each collection, find:
- Primary keyword: The main category search term (e.g., “organic face serum UK”)
- Secondary keywords: Related terms with similar intent (“natural face serum”, “vitamin C serum organic”)
- Competitor URLs: Who currently ranks on page 1 for this term? What does their collection page look like?
Free research tools: Google Search Console (what queries already drive impressions to this page), Google Suggest, and Ahrefs free tier for monthly search volume estimates. Paid tools: Ahrefs, SEMrush, Ubersuggest.
Step 2: Optimise the Title Tag and Meta Description
In Shopify admin, edit the collection, scroll to “Search engine listing preview” at the bottom, and click “Edit website SEO.”
- Title tag: Primary keyword + modifier + brand. Example: “Organic Face Serums – Natural, Vegan Formulas | Your Brand Name”. Keep under 60 characters.
- Meta description: Include the primary keyword, a value proposition, and a call to action. 150–160 characters. Example: “Shop our range of organic face serums. Vegan, cruelty-free, and formulated for sensitive skin. Free UK delivery over £30.”
Step 3: Write a Collection Description
The collection description appears above or below the product grid (depending on your theme settings). This is where you add the text content that tells Google what this page is about and gives customers context before they browse products.
A strong collection description includes:
- Opening paragraph (50–100 words): What this collection is, who it’s for, and why your products in this category are worth choosing. Include primary keyword naturally in the first 100 words.
- Product range overview (50–100 words): What types of products are in this collection, key variants or options.
- Why choose these products (50–100 words): Your differentiators — ingredients, craftsmanship, certifications, sourcing.
- Practical buyer guidance (50–100 words): How to choose the right product from this collection. This captures question-based searches and builds trust.
Aim for 250–500 words total. Not a wall of text — but enough for Google to understand the page’s topic fully. Format with headings and short paragraphs. Some themes display the description below the product grid — this keeps the shopping experience clean while still providing the SEO content.
Step 4: Internal Linking Between Collections
Add contextual internal links between related collections. A “Women’s Running Shoes” collection page should link to “Running Socks”, “Running Gear”, and “Men’s Running Shoes”. These links pass SEO authority between your collection pages and help Google understand your site’s topic hierarchy.
Step 5: Breadcrumb Navigation
Breadcrumbs (Home > Category > Subcategory) help both users and Google understand your site structure. Most Shopify themes include breadcrumbs — ensure they’re enabled and structured logically. Breadcrumb rich results in Google search results improve click-through rates.
Expected Timeline
Optimised collection pages with quality descriptions typically start showing improved Google positions in 2–4 months. For competitive terms, 6–12 months of sustained SEO investment (content, links, technical quality) before reaching page 1. Less competitive niche terms can rank in weeks. The asymmetry is striking: one afternoon of collection page SEO work can drive traffic and revenue for years.
