Shopify’s shipping configuration is one of the most under-invested areas for new store owners — and one of the most consequential. Incorrect shipping setup causes cart abandonment, unexpected losses on orders, and customer service headaches. This guide covers every option correctly.

Understanding Shipping Zones

A shipping zone is a group of countries or regions that share the same shipping rates. Go to Settings → Shipping and delivery to manage zones. You need at least two zones: domestic and international. Create additional zones when you want different pricing for specific regions — for example, EU at one rate and Rest of World at another.

Types of Shipping Rates

Shopify supports three rate types within each zone.

Flat rate: A fixed price regardless of order size or weight. Simple to manage. Works well when your products have similar weights. Example: £3.99 standard delivery, £7.99 express.

Weight-based rate: Price varies by total order weight. Requires accurate product weights to be entered in every product record. Prevents losses on heavy orders.

Carrier-calculated rates: Shopify queries the carrier’s API in real time and displays live rates at checkout. Requires Shopify Advanced or Plus plan, or the third-party carrier calculated shipping add-on (£15/month). Carriers include UPS, FedEx, USPS, and DHL natively.

Free Shipping Strategy

Free shipping above an order threshold is the most effective cart abandonment prevention tactic in ecommerce. Set a free shipping rate with a minimum order value condition. The recommended threshold is 20–30% above your average order value. If your AOV is £45, set free shipping at £55–£60 to encourage upselling without losing money on margins.

In Shopify, add this as a rate with the condition “Only for order price above £55.” Pair it with a cart progress bar app to show customers how close they are to free shipping — this can increase AOV by 10–15%.

Shipping Profiles for Different Products

Shopify’s shipping profiles allow different shipping rules for different product groups. Create a “Heavy Items” profile for large, expensive-to-ship products and a “Standard” profile for everything else. Products not assigned to a custom profile fall into the General shipping profile. This prevents cheap flat rates applying to products where they would cause losses.

Setting Up Local Delivery and Pickup

Go to Settings → Shipping and delivery → Local delivery. Enter your delivery radius and postcode areas. Set a minimum order value and delivery fee. Shopify notifies you of local delivery orders separately and provides an order management flow for drivers. In-store pickup is configured under “Local pickup” in the same settings section.

For complex multi-warehouse or multi-location shipping logic, our Shopify development services can integrate third-party logistics platforms with your store’s order management.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I offer free shipping on all orders in Shopify?

Go to Settings → Shipping and delivery, click your shipping zone, and add a rate with £0 price and no conditions. Remove or disable any other rates in the same zone if you want free shipping to be the only option.

Does Shopify automatically calculate customs duties?

Yes, via Shopify Markets. Enable “Collect duties and import taxes at checkout” in your market settings. Shopify calculates duties based on HS codes assigned to your products. This requires entering HS codes in the product’s Shipping section.

Can I restrict certain products from shipping to specific countries?

Not natively by product in standard Shopify. The workaround is to use shipping profiles and exclude specific zones from profiles containing restricted products. Apps like Shipping Rules can add more granular restrictions at the product level.
