Shipping Is a Conversion Problem as Much as a Cost Problem

Unexpected shipping costs are the number one reason for cart abandonment, cited by 49% of shoppers who abandon their cart. Shipping strategy isn’t just about logistics — it’s a conversion optimisation lever that directly impacts how many visitors become buyers. Get it right and you remove one of the biggest friction points in ecommerce.

Free Shipping vs Paid Shipping: The Data

Free shipping consistently outperforms in conversion tests. But “free” isn’t actually free — someone pays for it. The strategy: build your shipping cost into your product prices so you can offer free shipping without losing margin. If your average order is £40 and shipping costs £4, raise product prices by 8–10% and offer free shipping. Net margin stays the same; conversion rate goes up.

If your margins don’t support fully free shipping, a conditional free shipping threshold (free over £X) works nearly as well and increases AOV at the same time. Display the threshold prominently: “Free shipping on orders over £35” in your header and cart.

Carrier Selection for UK Shopify Stores

  • Royal Mail — most cost-effective for small parcels under 2kg. Click & Drop integrates with Shopify for automated label creation. Tracked 24 and 48 hour options.
  • Evri (Hermes) — very competitive rates for lightweight parcels. Reputation is mixed but improving.
  • DPD — premium tracked delivery with 1-hour delivery windows. Best for high-value orders where customer experience matters.
  • Parcelforce — good for heavier parcels and international shipping.
  • Multi-carrier comparison — use Shipstation, Parcelhub, or Easyship to compare rates across carriers and auto-select the cheapest option per order.

Shopify Shipping Settings

  • Set up shipping zones (UK, EU, Rest of World) with appropriate rates for each
  • Use weight-based or price-based rate rules for accurate shipping calculation
  • Enable calculated shipping rates if using Shopify Shipping (shows real carrier rates at checkout)
  • Set up shipping profiles if different products have different shipping requirements (dangerous goods, large/heavy items, digital downloads)

Packaging Optimisation

Packaging is both a cost centre and a brand experience. Optimise for both: right-size your packaging (oversize boxes increase both carrier costs and void fill material costs), use branded packaging for differentiated products, and consider sustainable packaging (increasingly important to consumers and can be a brand differentiator).

For carrier rate purposes, dimensional weight (volumetric weight) can be higher than actual weight. Compact packaging reduces dimensional weight and carrier costs significantly.

3PL Fulfilment: When to Outsource

Third-party logistics providers handle storage, picking, packing, and shipping on your behalf. Consider outsourcing to a 3PL when: shipping volume exceeds 50 orders/day, you’re renting storage space, order processing is taking more than 2 hours daily, or you want to expand into new geographic markets without local warehousing.

UK 3PL options: Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA) — limited to Amazon-compatible products; independent 3PLs like Huboo, Mintsoft, or Ware2Go for more flexible Shopify integration.
