Why Migrations Fail (and How to Avoid It)
Migrating a Shopify store incorrectly is one of the most common causes of sudden organic traffic drops. A migration done without proper URL redirect mapping, canonical tags, and crawl verification can destroy years of SEO equity in days. Done correctly, a migration to Shopify is low-risk — Shopify’s infrastructure is faster, more reliable, and better optimised for search than most alternatives. The discipline is in the preparation, not the execution.
Pre-Migration Checklist
- Export all current URLs — products, collections, blog posts, pages. Tools: Screaming Frog, Sitebulb, or a simple XML sitemap download
- Record current organic rankings and traffic per page — Google Search Console export, 3-month baseline
- Identify your most valuable pages (top 20% by organic traffic) — these get priority attention
- Export all product data — title, description, images, variants, price, SKU, inventory — Shopify’s import template covers most fields
- Export customer data — names, emails, order history (for LTV and segmentation)
- Export blog content — posts, authors, categories, tags
URL Redirect Strategy
Shopify has different URL structures from WooCommerce/Magento. Products are at /products/[handle], collections at /collections/[handle], blog posts at /blogs/[blog]/[post]. Every old URL that changes must have a 301 redirect to the new URL. In Shopify: Online Store → Navigation → URL Redirects → Import CSV. For stores with thousands of URLs, use a spreadsheet: old URL, new URL, map systematically, then bulk import.
Data Migration Steps
- Products and variants via Shopify CSV import or Matrixify (handles complex products better)
- Customer data via CSV import — maps order history, tags, email subscription status
- Blog posts via CSV or WordPress importer app (for WooCommerce migrations)
- Reviews via Judge.me or Stamped importer — most platforms have an export format these tools accept
- Images — Shopify imports image URLs; ensure source images remain accessible during migration period
Zero-Downtime Launch
- Build on a development store or with a password page enabled
- Do a full content and functionality QA on the staging URL before go-live
- Switch DNS at low-traffic time (Tuesday–Thursday 2–4am)
- DNS propagation: typically 15 minutes with Shopify, up to 48 hours in edge cases
- Keep the old site accessible during DNS propagation to avoid missing orders
Post-Migration: First 30 Days
- Submit new sitemap to Google Search Console immediately
- Request re-indexing of top 20 pages via GSC URL Inspection
- Monitor rankings weekly for first 4 weeks — some fluctuation is normal, significant drops need investigation
- Check redirect coverage — crawl the old sitemap URLs with Screaming Frog and verify all resolve to 200 or 301 correctly
