The Consumer Shift Toward Ethical Purchasing

67% of consumers globally consider sustainability when making a purchase, with this figure rising to 73% among Millennials (Nielsen). For Shopify stores, sustainability credentials are increasingly a conversion factor — not just a brand value. However, the opportunity comes with risk: greenwashing (making misleading environmental claims) is under increasing scrutiny from the ASA, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), and consumers themselves. Building a credible sustainability story requires substance before communication.

Starting With Sourcing

Ethical sourcing is the foundation of a credible sustainability story. Document your supply chain: where raw materials come from, how they are produced, and the working conditions of the people involved. Third-party certifications provide external validation: Fair Trade, B Corp, Rainforest Alliance, Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) for clothing. These certifications require independent auditing of your supply chain — they are not self-reported labels.

If your supply chain is not yet fully transparent, that is honest to say: “We are in the process of mapping our supply chain and working toward Fair Trade certification by [date]” is more credible than a vague “sustainably sourced” claim with no evidence.

Packaging

UK packaging regulation increasingly requires recyclable materials and limits single-use plastics. Beyond compliance, sustainable packaging is a customer expectation in ethical brand categories. Options: recycled cardboard boxes, compostable mailers, paper tape instead of plastic tape, tissue paper instead of plastic fill. The packaging itself becomes part of the sustainability story — include a small card explaining what the packaging is made of and how to recycle or compost it.

Plastic Packaging Tax: from April 2022, UK manufacturers and importers of plastic packaging with less than 30% recycled content pay £200 per metric tonne. Factor this into packaging decisions — moving to recycled-content packaging may be cost-neutral once the tax is accounted for.

Avoiding Greenwashing

The CMA’s Green Claims Code (2021) requires that environmental claims are: truthful and accurate, clear and unambiguous, not omit relevant information, only compare comparable products, and substantiated with robust evidence. Avoid: “eco-friendly” without qualification, “carbon neutral” without third-party offset certification, “plastic-free” when some plastic components remain, and “natural” for processed products with synthetic additives.

Communicating Your Sustainability Story

Create a dedicated sustainability page with: specific claims backed by evidence, progress metrics (tonnes of packaging reduced, percentage of organic ingredients, number of trees planted), third-party certification logos and links to the certifying body, honest acknowledgement of areas still being improved. A sustainability page that admits current limitations is more credible than one that presents a perfect picture — consumers are increasingly sceptical of brands that claim to have solved sustainability already.
