Getting Tax Wrong Is an Existential Risk

Tax errors on a Shopify store aren’t just accounting problems — they’re legal liabilities. Undercharging VAT means you owe the difference from your own pocket. Overcharging damages customer trust and may require refunds. Failing to register for VAT when legally required results in penalties and backdated liability. Tax setup done correctly, once, protects your business permanently. This guide covers the major tax scenarios for Shopify stores.

UK VAT Setup on Shopify

If your UK turnover exceeds £90,000/year, VAT registration is mandatory. Once registered: Shopify Admin → Settings → Taxes and duties → United Kingdom. Add your VAT number. Set standard rate (20%), reduced rate (5% for specific goods like children’s car seats and energy-saving products), and zero rate (children’s clothing, most food). Prices in your store can be set VAT-inclusive (consumer B2C stores) or VAT-exclusive (B2B stores). Shopify calculates and records the VAT component of each transaction.

US Sales Tax

US sales tax is complex: every state has different rates, and nexus rules (when you must collect tax) changed with the 2018 South Dakota v. Wayfair Supreme Court ruling. Economic nexus: most states require tax collection once you exceed $100,000 or 200 transactions per year in that state, even without a physical presence. Shopify Tax (available via Settings → Taxes) handles US nexus tracking and rate calculation automatically — highly recommended for stores selling to US customers.

EU VAT: OSS and IOSS

  • OSS (One Stop Shop) — if you’re EU-based and sell to consumers in other EU countries, OSS lets you file one VAT return covering all EU countries rather than registering in each separately
  • IOSS (Import One Stop Shop) — for non-EU businesses selling goods under €150 to EU consumers. Register for IOSS, charge destination-country VAT rate, remit via single return
  • Goods over €150: standard customs procedures apply at import, VAT collected at border
  • Shopify handles IOSS calculations if you’re registered — enter your IOSS number in Settings → Taxes → European Union

Digital Products and Tax

Digital goods (ebooks, courses, software, downloadable files) have special tax treatment in most jurisdictions: UK: 20% VAT on digital goods sold to UK consumers regardless of seller’s location. EU: VAT at buyer’s country rate for all digital goods (handled via OSS/MOSS). US: varies by state — some states tax digital goods, others don’t. Shopify supports digital goods tax handling via the Taxes and Duties settings with proper product categorisation.
