How Much Can You Customise Shopify Without Code?

More than most store owners realise — but less than they sometimes need. Shopify’s theme editor has become significantly more powerful over the past two years, especially for stores running Dawn or other OS 2.0 themes. Understanding what’s possible without code helps you move faster and know exactly when you need to bring in a developer.

What You Can Do Without Any Code

Theme Editor (Sections and Blocks)

Every page in your Shopify store can be built using the drag-and-drop sections editor. You can:

  • Add, remove, and reorder sections on any page
  • Configure each section’s content (text, images, button labels, links)
  • Set colours, fonts, and spacing within sections
  • Enable or disable sections per device (desktop/mobile visibility toggles)
  • Duplicate sections and pages to build new templates quickly

On OS 2.0 themes (Dawn, Sense, Refresh, and most third-party themes from 2022+), this extends to product, collection, and blog templates — not just the homepage.

Global Theme Settings

Under Theme Settings in the theme editor, you can change without code:

  • Brand colours (primary, secondary, background, text)
  • Typography (choose from Google Fonts or system fonts)
  • Button shapes (squared, rounded, pill)
  • Header layout and sticky behaviour
  • Footer layout and content
  • Cart behaviour (drawer vs page)
  • Product image aspect ratios
  • Badge styles

Metafields (Product-Level Customisation)

Shopify’s native metafields allow you to add custom fields to products, collections, and pages. Without code, you can create metafield definitions in Settings > Custom Data, then connect them to your theme using the theme editor’s “Connect dynamic source” option.

Common uses: size guides, care instructions, ingredients lists, warranty info, custom product badges, downloadable files.

Page Templates

Create multiple templates for the same page type. For example, three different product page templates: one for apparel (with size guide), one for electronics (with specs table), one for simple products. Assign which template each product uses from the product editor without writing any code.

What Requires Basic Code Edits (Liquid)

These changes typically require editing theme files in Shopify’s code editor, but are manageable with basic Liquid knowledge or short tutorials:

  • Changing the default sort order on collection pages
  • Adding announcement bar countdown timers
  • Modifying product card hover effects
  • Adding custom trust badge icons to the cart
  • Showing estimated delivery date on product pages
  • Hiding “Powered by Shopify” in the footer
  • Adding a sticky add-to-cart bar on product pages (if your theme doesn’t include one)

These are typically 5–20 lines of Liquid code. Shopify’s developer documentation is excellent, and there are step-by-step tutorials for all of the above on YouTube and the Shopify Community forums.

What Requires a Professional Developer

Some customisations go beyond what the theme editor and basic Liquid can handle efficiently:

  • Custom mega menus — Complex navigation with images, columns, and dropdowns
  • Custom product configurators — Let customers personalise products with engraving, custom text, or colour options that affect pricing
  • Advanced filtering — Filtering by multiple attributes simultaneously with real-time results
  • Custom checkout experiences — Upsells, custom fields, multi-step checkout (requires Plus for checkout.liquid)
  • Shopify Functions — Custom discount logic, delivery customisation, payment customisation
  • Third-party integrations — Connecting custom ERP, PIM, or loyalty systems to your Shopify storefront
  • Custom sections from scratch — Building new section types with full Schema controls for the theme editor

The Right Approach: Start Without Code, Know When to Stop

Most store owners can get 80% of their desired customisation done without writing a line of code. Do that first. Build out your pages with the theme editor. Use metafields for product-level custom content. Set up your brand colours and typography globally.

When you hit a wall — when you know what you want but the theme editor can’t do it — that’s when a developer becomes worth the investment. A focused developer engagement of 1–2 days can typically unlock everything on your “would be nice” list without the cost of a full custom build.
