Why TikTok Works Differently Than Every Other Channel

TikTok is an interest graph, not a social graph. Unlike Instagram (which shows content from accounts you follow) or Facebook (ads and friends), TikTok distributes content based on what users engage with — regardless of whether they follow you. A brand new account with zero followers can reach one million people on the first video if the content is right. This is the fundamental opportunity: organic TikTok reach is more accessible for new Shopify stores than any other platform.

Content Formats That Work for Shopify Stores

Product demos: 30–60 second videos showing what your product does, ideally solving a problem in a visually satisfying way. The “before and after” format is TikTok’s highest-performing content structure for physical products. A cleaning product showing a grimy surface becoming spotless, a skincare product showing application and immediate results, a tool solving a frustrating problem in 10 seconds — these formats generate millions of views organically.

Packing and unboxing: behind-the-scenes footage of order fulfilment. Watching someone pack orders — hearing the tape gun, seeing the product, watching the box fill — has enormous organic reach. It humanises the brand and subtly communicates that there are real orders being packed, adding social proof.

Day in the life: founder content performing business activities. Journaling orders, checking analytics, preparing a product launch, dealing with a supplier issue. This format builds parasocial connection and makes people root for the brand to succeed.

The First 3 Seconds Rule

TikTok’s algorithm measures watch time aggressively. If viewers skip in the first 3 seconds, the video stops getting distributed. The first frame must create curiosity, shock, or immediate value. Examples: “I spent £1,000 testing every [product category] so you don’t have to” — opens a loop. “Stop buying [wrong product] and try this instead” — challenges a belief. “This thing pays for itself in 2 uses” — creates a value statement. The hook determines whether anyone sees the rest of the video.

Trending Sounds and Formats

Trending sounds and formats give videos an algorithmic boost — TikTok promotes content using trending audio. Check the TikTok Creative Centre (ads.tiktok.com/business/creativecenter) for trending songs in your region. Adapt your product content to use trending sounds where natural. Do not force a trend that does not fit your brand — awkward trend-chasing performs worse than authentic original content.

Posting Frequency and Consistency

Post at minimum 3 times per week. Accounts that post daily grow 2–3x faster than those posting weekly. TikTok rewards consistency — the algorithm learns what your content is about and who to show it to from the pattern of your posts. The first 20–30 videos are a learning phase for both you and the algorithm. Do not judge your TikTok strategy based on the first 10 posts.
