AOV Is the Easiest Revenue Lever You’re Probably Ignoring

Customer acquisition costs money. Every visitor you convert into a buyer has an associated cost — whether from paid ads, SEO effort, or email marketing. Increasing average order value (AOV) extracts more revenue from each conversion without spending more on acquisition. It’s the most capital-efficient growth lever available.

If your current AOV is £45 and you increase it to £60 through upsell and cross-sell, you’ve increased revenue by 33% without a single extra customer. Here’s how to do it systematically.

Upsell vs Cross-Sell: What’s the Difference?

  • Upsell — encourage the customer to buy a more expensive version of what they’re already buying. “Upgrade to the 500ml (better value)” or “Add 2 more for 20% off.”
  • Cross-sell — encourage the customer to add related items to their order. “Customers who bought this also bought [complementary product].”

Tactic 1: Product Bundles

Bundle related products together at a slight discount. A skincare brand might bundle cleanser + toner + moisturiser as a “Starter Routine” at £65 versus £78 individually. Bundles increase AOV (customer buys 3 items instead of 1) while giving the customer a perceived deal. Shopify apps for bundles: Bundler, Frequently Bought Together, Bundle Products.

Tactic 2: Frequently Bought Together

Add a “Frequently Bought Together” section to product pages, algorithmically or manually curated. Amazon pioneered this and it’s responsible for 35% of their revenue. On Shopify, apps like Frequently Bought Together or Product Recommendations replicate this. The key is relevance — the suggested products must genuinely complement the main product. Random suggestions are worse than no suggestions.

Tactic 3: In-Cart Upsell

When a customer adds to cart, show a targeted upsell recommendation in the cart drawer before they proceed to checkout. Options: upgrade to bigger size, add a complementary product, add protection/care product. Cart drawer upsells convert at 8–15% of visitors who see them.

Tactic 4: Free Shipping Threshold

Display a free shipping progress bar in the cart: “You’re £12 away from free shipping.” This single tactic consistently increases AOV by 10–20% because customers add items to cross the threshold rather than pay for shipping. Set your free shipping threshold at your current AOV + 15–25% to maximise the effect.

Tactic 5: Post-Purchase Upsell (Highest Conversion Rate)

Immediately after checkout, before the thank-you page, show a one-click upsell offer. The customer has already committed to buying — their purchase psychology is still active. Industry average: 5–15% acceptance rate on post-purchase upsells. Apps: ReConvert, Carthook, Zipify Pages. One-click acceptance (no need to re-enter payment details) is critical for conversion.

Tactic 6: Volume Discounts

“Buy 1 for £15, buy 2 for £25, buy 3 for £33” — tiered pricing encourages customers to buy more units in a single order. Works best for consumables, gifts (buy one, gift one), and products people regularly repurchase. Show the per-unit savings prominently to make the value calculation easy.
