Your product photography is often the single biggest factor determining whether visitors buy or leave. Research consistently shows that better photos directly correlate with higher conversion rates, lower return rates, and higher average order values. The good news: professional-looking product photos do not require an expensive studio. Here is how to get great results with minimal investment.

You Do Not Need a DSLR Camera

Any flagship or mid-range smartphone from the last 3 years (iPhone 13+, Samsung Galaxy S21+, or equivalent) shoots product photos that are indistinguishable from professional camera shots when lit correctly. Camera quality matters far less than lighting and styling. A £1,000 camera in bad light produces worse images than a phone in good light. Focus your investment on lighting before camera gear.

Natural Light Is Your Best (and Free) Studio Light

Set up your shooting area next to a large north-facing window (or south-facing in the southern hemisphere) on a bright but overcast day. Overcast skies act as a giant softbox — diffusing harsh sunlight into even, shadow-free illumination that is ideal for product photography. Direct sunlight creates harsh shadows and blown-out highlights that make even beautiful products look amateur.

Place a white foam board or white cardboard on the opposite side of the product from the window to reflect light back and fill in shadows. This simple setup costs under ₹100 and produces results that rival expensive studio lighting for most products.

White Background for Product Shots, Lifestyle for Context

Every product page should have at minimum one clean white background shot showing the full product clearly. White backgrounds look professional, load fast, and work across all platforms (Amazon, Google Shopping, Instagram ads, your Shopify store). Use a white poster board or sweep paper as your background.

Alongside white background shots, include lifestyle images showing the product in use. A tea set photographed on a wooden table with a book and a candle. A handbag photographed being carried. A skincare product shown in a bathroom setting. Lifestyle images drive emotional connection and significantly improve social media performance and conversion rates.

Shoot Multiple Angles for Every Product

The minimum set of images for any product: front view, back view (if applicable), side view or three-quarter angle, close-up of key detail (texture, stitching, label), and scale reference shot (showing size relative to a hand or common object). For clothing, add a model shot in at least one size. For food, add a shot showing the product being used or served.

Edit Consistently Using Free Tools

Consistent editing across all your product images makes your store look professionally curated. Use Canva (free) or Snapseed (free) to apply the same brightness, contrast, and white balance adjustments to every image. Batch apply the same preset across all photos in a collection so they look cohesive on your collections page.

For removing backgrounds quickly, use Remove.bg (free for low resolution) to isolate products on white or transparent backgrounds. For bulk background removal on Shopify, the Shopify admin now includes built-in background removal for product images.

Compress Images Before Uploading

A beautiful 8MB photo that takes 6 seconds to load will hurt your sales more than a slightly lower-quality 200KB image that loads instantly. Always compress product images using TinyPNG before uploading to Shopify. Target file sizes under 300KB for product photos and under 500KB for lifestyle images. This single habit keeps your store fast and your customers engaged.
