Payment setup is the most consequential configuration decision in your Shopify store. The wrong gateway choice costs you a percentage of every sale. This guide covers the right payment gateway for each major market and the exact steps to activate them.
Shopify Payments: The Default Choice
Shopify Payments is Shopify’s native gateway, powered by Stripe. It eliminates the transaction fee (0.5–2%) that applies when using third-party gateways. Go to Settings → Payments → Shopify Payments → Activate. You will need to verify your business details and bank account.
Shopify Payments is available in: UK, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. If your business is registered in one of these countries, use Shopify Payments.

Setting Up Razorpay for India
- Create a Razorpay account at razorpay.com and complete KYC (takes 1–3 business days).
- In Shopify admin, go to Settings → Payments → Third-party providers → Search “Razorpay.”
- Click Activate Razorpay and enter your Key ID and Key Secret from Razorpay dashboard.
- Enable payment methods: cards, UPI, NetBanking, wallets — all available via Razorpay.
- Set currency to INR in Shopify Settings → Store details.
Razorpay’s 2% domestic card fee is standard. UPI transactions are currently free for merchants. International cards attract 3% + currency conversion.
Setting Up Telr for UAE
Telr supports AED transactions and is widely used by UAE-based merchants. Create an account at telr.com, submit trade licence and Emirates ID documents, then install the Telr app from the Shopify App Store. Telr also supports cash on delivery (COD) configuration, which is still preferred by a significant portion of UAE customers.
Adding PayPal
PayPal is available to most Shopify merchants globally and adds buyer confidence for international orders. Go to Settings → Payments and enable PayPal in the Alternative payment methods section. Shopify activates a basic PayPal integration automatically — upgrade to PayPal Commerce Platform for express checkout and Pay Later options.
Test Your Payment Setup
Before going live, use Shopify’s Bogus Gateway for a test order: Settings → Payments → Use a test gateway. Alternatively, use your real gateway with a test card number (each provider has specific test card numbers). Confirm that the order appears in your admin, the customer receives a confirmation email, and the fulfilment flow triggers correctly.
