Most Shopify A/B Tests Are Wasted
The majority of ecommerce A/B tests fail to produce reliable insights — not because A/B testing doesn’t work, but because tests are run incorrectly. Insufficient traffic, testing too many variables simultaneously, ending tests too early, or testing elements that don’t meaningfully affect conversion — these mistakes produce inconclusive results and false confidence. Done correctly, A/B testing is how the world’s best ecommerce stores systematically compound conversion improvements over time.
The A/B Testing Process
- Step 1: Identify the hypothesis — “Changing the CTA button from ‘Add to Cart’ to ‘Buy Now’ will increase the add-to-cart rate because ‘Buy Now’ signals more immediacy.” The hypothesis must be specific, testable, and based on evidence (heatmap, session recording, or funnel data)
- Step 2: Calculate required sample size — use a sample size calculator (abtestguide.com/calc). A test on a product page converting at 3% needs 5,000+ visitors per variant to detect a 15% relative improvement with 95% statistical significance
- Step 3: Run the test — equal traffic split, same time period for both variants, no other changes during the test
- Step 4: Analyse results — only call a winner when you’ve reached statistical significance AND your predetermined sample size. Don’t “peek” early
What to Test on Shopify (Priority Order)
- CTA button text and colour on product pages — highest traffic, direct conversion impact
- Product page hero image (lifestyle vs white background)
- Price display format (£49.99 vs £50 vs “From £49.99”)
- Shipping cost display (included in price vs shown separately)
- Review placement (above or below product description)
- Free shipping threshold messaging (“Free shipping on orders over £50” vs banner vs progress bar)
- Checkout button text (“Proceed to Checkout” vs “Secure Checkout” vs “Complete Purchase”)
