Google Ads puts your products in front of people who are actively searching to buy. Unlike social media ads where you interrupt someone’s browsing, Google Search and Shopping ads reach buyers at the moment of purchase intent — making them one of the most efficient paid channels for Shopify stores. Here is how to set up your first campaigns without wasting budget.
Connect Google Merchant Centre to Shopify
For Google Shopping campaigns (the product photo ads you see at the top of search results), you need a Google Merchant Centre account with your product feed connected. In Shopify, install the Google and YouTube channel app — it automatically syncs your product catalogue to Merchant Centre. Once approved (usually 3 to 5 days), your products are eligible to appear in Shopping ads.
Make sure your product titles in Shopify include the keywords buyers search for. “Women’s Blue Cotton Kurti Size M” ranks better in Shopping than just “Kurti – Blue.” Optimised product titles are the single most important factor for Shopping ad performance.
Start With Performance Max Campaigns
Google’s Performance Max (PMax) campaigns are the recommended starting point for Shopify stores in 2026. They use Google’s machine learning to show your ads across Search, Shopping, YouTube, Gmail, and Display automatically. Feed them your best product images, headlines, and descriptions, and Google optimises placement and bidding across all its networks.
Start with a daily budget of ₹500 to ₹1,000 for the first 2 to 3 weeks. PMax needs time to learn — resist the urge to make changes daily. Give it at least 2 weeks of data before judging performance.
Add Search Campaigns for High-Intent Keywords
Alongside PMax, run a Search campaign targeting your most valuable keywords — the specific terms people type when they are ready to buy. Use exact match and phrase match rather than broad match to avoid irrelevant clicks. Group your keywords tightly: one theme per ad group, 5 to 10 keywords maximum.
Write ads that match the searcher’s intent precisely. If someone searches “organic face wash for oily skin,” your ad should say exactly that — not a generic brand headline. High relevance between keyword, ad, and landing page is what keeps your cost-per-click low and your quality score high.
Track Conversions Properly From Day One
Without conversion tracking, you are flying blind. Install the Google Ads conversion tag via Google Tag Manager before spending a single rupee. Track: purchases (most important), add-to-carts, and checkout initiations. This data is what Google uses to optimise your bids — without it, you are paying for clicks that may never turn into sales.
Understand Your Target ROAS
ROAS (Return on Ad Spend) is your benchmark metric. If you spend ₹1,000 on ads and get ₹3,000 in sales, your ROAS is 3x. For most ecommerce businesses, a ROAS of 3 to 5x is healthy. Once your campaigns have at least 30 conversions, switch to a Target ROAS bidding strategy and let Google’s algorithm optimise towards your goal.
Run Remarketing to Convert Warm Visitors
Most visitors do not buy on their first visit. Remarketing shows ads to people who have already visited your store — reminding them of what they looked at and giving them a nudge to return. Remarketing typically delivers 3 to 5x better ROAS than cold traffic campaigns and is one of the most efficient uses of a small budget.
