What Affiliate Marketing Means for Shopify Stores
Affiliate marketing is performance-based: you pay publishers a commission only when they drive a sale to your Shopify store. Publishers include: bloggers, content sites, deal aggregators (VoucherCodes, TopCashback), comparison sites, email newsletters, and YouTube creators. The attraction is low financial risk — you only pay for results.
For Shopify stores, affiliate marketing can become a significant revenue channel at relatively low cost — the primary investment is in setting up the infrastructure and recruiting relevant publishers.
Affiliate Networks vs In-House Programme
Affiliate Networks
Networks like AWIN, CJ Affiliate, and Rakuten provide: a marketplace of publishers who are already looking for programmes to join, tracking technology (unique links, cookie attribution), payment processing (they pay publishers on your behalf, you pay the network), and compliance management.
Cost: network joining fee (£100–£500 for most UK networks), monthly minimum (£50–£150), and the commission percentage you set (typically 5–15% of sale value).
AWIN is the dominant UK affiliate network — most UK bloggers, cashback sites, and deal publishers are already AWIN members. If you’re starting affiliate marketing for a UK store, AWIN is the right first network.
In-House Affiliate Software
Apps like GoAffPro, UpPromote, or LeadDyno add affiliate tracking directly to Shopify. You manage your own publisher relationships, provide affiliate links, and track conversions through the app.
More control, lower fees (£20–£50/month vs network costs), but requires you to recruit affiliates yourself. Good for brand ambassadors, micro-influencers you work with directly, and loyal customers you want to formalise as affiliates.
Commission Structure
Setting the right commission is critical. Too low: publishers won’t promote you when they can earn more elsewhere. Too high: affiliate revenue becomes unprofitable.
- Standard range for UK ecommerce: 5–15% of order value
- High-margin products (supplements, beauty, digital): Can support 15–25% commissions
- Lower-margin physical goods: 5–8% is more typical
- Introductory rate for new publishers: Offer a higher rate for the first 3 months to incentivise launch promotion
Your commission must leave you profitable after the commission + affiliate network fee + product cost + shipping. Calculate break-even commission: if your gross margin is 40%, a 20% commission leaves 20% gross margin on affiliate-driven sales — still positive. Below your break-even commission point, affiliates aren’t worth having.
Recruiting Affiliates
- Your existing customers: Email your customer list — loyal customers who love your products and have an audience (blog, newsletter, social following) are natural affiliates.
- Relevant bloggers: Search “[your product category] blog UK” and identify bloggers who write about products like yours. Send a personal pitch explaining your programme and commission rate.
- Comparison and deal sites: On AWIN, these publishers will join your programme automatically if your commission is competitive. Cashback sites (TopCashback, Quidco) are particularly effective for driving first-time buyers.
- Content creators: YouTube reviewers and Instagram creators in your niche. Offer affiliate commissions instead of or in addition to gifting.
Affiliate Marketing Pitfalls
- Coupon affiliates cannibalising your own traffic: Customers who would have bought anyway via Google search end up using an affiliate’s coupon code, paying you less. Set up cookie windows and last-click attribution carefully to understand true incremental value.
- Brand bidding: Some affiliates run paid search ads on your brand name, capturing customers searching for your store and adding their commission layer. Prevent this via network terms of service.
- Lack of content affiliate investment: The highest-value affiliates (content bloggers who write review articles that rank on Google) require relationship investment — they need product samples, high-quality assets, and regular communication. Don’t just set the programme up and wait.
