What Good Analytics Actually Looks Like
Most Shopify store owners look at total sales and traffic and nothing else. The stores that scale look at conversion rate by traffic source, repeat purchase rate by acquisition channel, cohort retention, average order value trends, and profit per customer — not just revenue. The difference between £500k/year and £2M/year is often not more traffic — it’s understanding which traffic converts and why.
Key Shopify Native Reports
- Sales by channel — where is revenue actually coming from? Organic, direct, paid, email?
- Conversion funnel — how many visitors reach product page → add to cart → checkout → purchase? Where are you losing them?
- Average order value over time — is upselling and cross-selling working?
- Returning customer rate — what percentage of this month’s orders are from repeat buyers? Healthy stores trend toward 30–40%
- Customer cohort analysis — of customers acquired in January, how many bought again in February, March, April? Shows retention quality by acquisition period
Google Analytics 4 for Shopify
Shopify’s native analytics is good; GA4 is better for multi-touch attribution and cross-device tracking. Install via the Google & YouTube channel app or directly via a GA4 measurement ID in Online Store → Preferences. Key GA4 reports for ecommerce: Monetisation → Ecommerce purchases (item-level revenue data), User acquisition (first-touch attribution), Traffic acquisition (session-level attribution), Retention overview (new vs returning users).
The KPIs That Actually Matter
- Conversion rate — sessions to orders. 1–2% is average; 3–5% is strong; 5%+ is exceptional. Benchmark by traffic source separately
- Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC) — total marketing spend ÷ new customers acquired. Must be lower than LTV
- Customer Lifetime Value (LTV) — average revenue per customer over their relationship with your store. Segment by acquisition channel
- Gross margin by product category — revenue without COGS. Directs where to invest marketing spend
- Email Revenue % — what percentage of total revenue comes from email? Healthy: 20–30%
Setting Up a Weekly Dashboard
Don’t review data daily — you’ll optimise for noise. Weekly review: sales vs last week vs same week last year, conversion rate, new vs returning customers, email performance, and one specific KPI you’re actively improving. Monthly review: cohort data, LTV by channel, CAC vs LTV ratio, product performance. Quarterly review: channel attribution, margin by category, customer segment health.
