Why Most Shopify Store Owners Ignore Their Analytics
Shopify provides more data than most store owners ever look at. The dashboard number they check — total sales — tells you what happened but not why. Real decisions require understanding conversion rates, traffic sources, product performance, and customer behaviour patterns. This guide covers how to extract the insights that actually change how you run your store.
The Three Metrics That Matter Most
1. Conversion Rate
Your online store conversion rate (sessions that end in a purchase ÷ total sessions) is the single most important performance metric. The Shopify industry average is around 1.5–2.5%. If your rate is below 1%, fixing conversion should be your priority over driving more traffic.
Find it: Analytics > Reports > Conversion over time. Check it by device (mobile vs desktop) and by traffic source. A low mobile conversion rate with high mobile traffic tells you exactly where to focus.
2. Average Order Value (AOV)
How much each customer spends per order. Every £10 increase in AOV is multiplied across every transaction. Improving AOV through upsells, bundles, or free shipping thresholds is often more efficient than acquiring more customers.
Find it: Analytics > Reports > Average order value. Track it over time. Drops in AOV after introducing changes (new checkout flow, removed upsells) signal a problem to investigate.
3. Customer Lifetime Value (LTV)
How much revenue a typical customer generates over their entire relationship with your store. LTV determines how much you can afford to spend acquiring a customer. High LTV = you can outbid competitors for ad space while remaining profitable.
Find it: Analytics > Reports > Customers over time > LTV. Segment by acquisition source to see which channels bring your best long-term customers.
Traffic Source Analysis
Shopify’s acquisition reports show where your sessions come from. Look for:
- Organic search — Your SEO investment working. Track this trending up over time.
- Direct — Brand awareness. People typing your URL or coming via bookmarks.
- Paid social — Meta, TikTok ad spend. Compare conversion rate from paid vs organic.
- Email — Your owned channel performance. Should be your highest converting source.
- Referral — Incoming links from other sites. Great for SEO; track which referrers send buyers vs browsers.
The most valuable insight here: which source brings the customers with the highest LTV? That’s where to invest more, regardless of volume.
Product Performance Reports
Analytics > Reports > Products over time shows which products drive your revenue. But go deeper:
- Products with traffic but low conversion — High views, low sales. Problem with product page? Pricing? Trust signals?
- Products frequently added to cart but not purchased — Checkout friction or price resistance on these specific items
- Products frequently returned — Description/expectation mismatch needing fixing
- Products often in multi-item orders — Natural bundle candidates for cross-sells
Using Shopify Reports vs Google Analytics
Shopify’s native analytics are solid for ecommerce metrics (revenue, conversion, products, customers). For behaviour analytics — what paths users take, where they drop off, scroll depth — you need Google Analytics 4 installed on your store.
GA4 installation: go to Online Store > Preferences > Google Analytics and enter your GA4 measurement ID. Then set up Enhanced Ecommerce tracking to see checkout funnel drop-off, which is not visible in Shopify analytics natively.
Building a Weekly Analytics Review
Five metrics to check every Monday morning:
- Last week revenue vs previous week and same week last year
- Conversion rate vs 4-week average
- Traffic volume and source breakdown
- AOV trend
- Top-performing and worst-performing products
This 15-minute weekly review builds the habit of data-driven decision making. Stores that monitor and respond to data consistently outperform stores that operate on intuition over time — even when individual founders have excellent instincts.
