What a CRO Audit Finds That Analytics Alone Misses

Analytics tells you where customers leave your store. Heatmaps and session recordings tell you why. A CRO audit combines both: quantitative data showing the magnitude of each drop-off point, and qualitative data showing the behaviour patterns causing it. Without both, you are optimising blind — making changes based on theory rather than evidence. A thorough CRO audit typically surfaces 5–15 specific actionable changes per store, of which 2–4 are high-impact enough to visibly move conversion rate.

Step 1: Funnel Analysis

Map your conversion funnel: Session → Product View → Add to Cart → Checkout → Purchase. In Shopify Analytics → Reports, find the Checkout behaviour report. Calculate the drop-off rate at each stage. Industry benchmarks: Product View to Add to Cart — 3–8% is typical. Add to Cart to Checkout initiation — 50–65%. Checkout initiation to Purchase — 65–80%. Any stage significantly below benchmark is your priority investigation area.

Step 2: Heatmap Analysis

Step 4: Technical Audit

Technical issues silently kill conversions. Check: mobile checkout on real devices (not just browser emulation) — broken layouts on specific phones are common, page load speed (above 5s on mobile equals near-certain abandonment), broken product images, 404 errors on popular pages (use Google Search Console to find top-linked 404s), and checkout form errors that are not clearly communicated to customers.

Step 5: Trust Audit

Trust signals reduce purchase anxiety. Audit every product page for: review count and rating visibility, trust badges (secure checkout, SSL, return policy), clear shipping timeline, returns policy accessibility, contact information visibility. The absence of any of these is a trust gap. For new stores with no reviews, trust badges and a clear returns policy are the most impactful trust additions until review volume builds.

Quick Wins to Implement Immediately

  • Add a sticky add-to-cart button on mobile product pages
  • Display delivery timeline prominently (e.g. “Order today — arrives Wednesday”)
  • Add a free shipping threshold bar to cart and product pages
  • Show stock urgency (“Only 3 left”) on low-stock products
  • Simplify the checkout form — remove optional fields that add friction
