Why Mobile Conversion Rates Are Lower Than Desktop
Over 70% of Shopify traffic comes from mobile devices, but mobile conversion rates are typically 60–70% lower than desktop. This gap represents a massive revenue opportunity. Most of the difference isn’t intent-based — mobile shoppers aren’t less likely to buy. They’re stopped by friction that desktop users don’t encounter: small tap targets, difficult image viewing, hard-to-read text, and checkout forms that are painful to fill on a touch keyboard.
Fix the friction and mobile conversion rates catch up to desktop. This guide covers the specific changes that make the biggest difference.
Product Page CRO for Mobile
Sticky Add-to-Cart Button
On mobile, the add-to-cart button often scrolls off screen once a customer starts reading about the product. A sticky ATC bar that floats at the bottom of the screen — always visible — removes this friction. Many Shopify themes include this as a setting. If yours doesn’t, a theme app like Sticky Add to Cart handles it without coding.
Image Gallery That Works on Touch
Swipeable image galleries convert better than dots-and-arrows navigation. Show product image count (“1/6”) so customers know more images exist. Pinch-to-zoom on product images is expected by mobile shoppers — ensure your theme supports it.
Above-Fold Content on Mobile
Check what your product page looks like on a mobile screen before any scrolling. You should see: product title, price, primary product image, and ATC button. If the price is buried or the ATC requires scrolling, rearrange the page template for mobile.
Variant Selection UX
Default Shopify dropdown menus for variant selection are poor on mobile. Switch to button-style or swatch-style variant selection. Colour swatches in particular dramatically improve mobile UX for fashion products — much easier to tap than selecting from a dropdown list. Apps: Variant Option Product Options, Swwatch.
Trust Signals Above the Fold
Review count, star rating, and key trust signals (free shipping threshold, returns period) should appear near the price on mobile, not buried in a section that requires scrolling to find.
Navigation and Discovery on Mobile
Search Bar Prominence
Mobile shoppers often use search to find products rather than browsing navigation menus. Make your search bar visible in the header without requiring a tap to expand. Predictive search that shows products and categories as the user types converts significantly better than basic search.
Simplified Navigation
Desktop mega-menus don’t translate to mobile. Review your mobile navigation — it should have a maximum of 6–8 top-level categories. Deeply nested navigation (3+ levels) is almost unusable on mobile. Prioritise your highest-revenue categories.
Filter UX on Collection Pages
Filtering on mobile requires a full-screen filter drawer (not a sidebar). Your theme should already handle this — check that filtering is accessible, the filter drawer is full height, and filter tags can be removed individually rather than requiring a full reset.
Checkout Optimisation for Mobile
- Accelerated checkout buttons — Apple Pay and Shop Pay skip the form entirely. On mobile, these are massive. A customer paying with Face ID takes 5 seconds to complete checkout. Ensure these buttons are prominent on product pages and the cart.
- Correct keyboard types — The email field should trigger the email keyboard (@ symbol prominent). The phone number field should trigger the numeric keyboard. Shopify’s checkout handles this, but custom form fields in apps sometimes don’t.
- Autofill compatibility — Your checkout should work with iOS and Android autofill for addresses. Test by actually filling out checkout on your phone.
- Tap target sizes — Buttons should be at least 48px tall. Checkbox and radio button tap areas should be generous. Small, tightly packed options cause tapping errors and frustration.
Speed on Mobile
Mobile users are often on cellular data with slower connections than desktop. A store that loads in 2 seconds on desktop can take 5+ seconds on mobile 4G. Speed is your most important CRO lever for mobile because slow stores lose customers before they even see products.
- Target mobile PageSpeed score of 50+ (70+ is excellent)
- All product images under 200KB, WebP format
- No third-party scripts loading synchronously
- Consider removing unused apps — app scripts load on every page even after deletion unless you remove their code
Improving mobile conversion from 1.5% to 2.5% on a store doing 10,000 mobile sessions per month adds 100 orders. If your AOV is £60, that’s £6,000/month in additional revenue — from UX fixes, not ad spend.
