Cross-Selling vs Upselling: The Difference That Matters
Upselling is showing a more expensive version of what the customer is viewing. Cross-selling is showing a complementary product that pairs with what they are buying. Both increase AOV, but cross-selling works at every price point and does not require the customer to change their mind — only to add more. The most effective Shopify AOV strategies combine both.
Product Page Cross-Sells
Below the add to cart button is the highest-converting position for cross-sells on a product page. Show two to four complementary items under a heading like “Frequently bought together” or “Complete the look”. Amazon popularised this section and it remains effective because it is functional — customers genuinely want to know what goes with their purchase.
In Shopify, configure complementary products using product metafields. Go to Settings → Custom data → Products, add a “Complementary products” metafield of type Product list, and assign it per product. Reference this metafield in your theme template to render the cross-sell section. This is more targeted than algorithm-generated recommendations.
Cart Cross-Sells
The cart is the second-best location for cross-sells. When a customer has committed to buying (they have added an item to cart), they are psychologically open to adding more. Use a slide-out cart that shows recommended items alongside the cart contents. The heading “You might also need…” or “Customers also bought…” frames the suggestions as helpful rather than pushy.
Apps like Frequently Bought Together and LimeSpot automate cart recommendations based on purchase history. For stores with limited data, configure manual recommendations by product category — if the cart contains running shoes, show running socks, insoles, and lace-ups.
Bundle Offers as Cross-Sells
Bundles are pre-configured cross-sells that remove the customer’s need to think. Instead of showing four individual complementary products, show a bundle: “Starter Kit — includes [product A], [product B], and [product C] — save 12%”. Bundles consistently outperform individual cross-sell recommendations in AOV testing.
Use Shopify Bundles (native, free) or Bundle Builder (app) to create curated bundles. Display the per-item savings prominently. Bundle names matter: “The Complete Setup”, “The Starter Kit”, “The Gift Bundle” all convert better than “Bundle Option 1”.
Email Cross-Sells Post-Purchase
The post-purchase email sequence is the most underused cross-sell channel. Three to seven days after delivery (enough time for the customer to use the product), send an email: “How are you getting on with [product]? Here are some things customers usually get next…” Link to two or three complementary products with a small discount or loyalty points incentive.
This cross-sell email typically sees 15–25% open rates from buyers and 3–8% click-to-purchase rates. On high-volume stores, it becomes a significant repeat revenue driver.
Cross-Sell Data and Iteration
Review your Shopify analytics to find naturally occurring cross-purchases. Products that are already frequently bought together should be your first manual cross-sell configurations — you are reinforcing a behaviour that already exists. New cross-sell suggestions should be tested: run for 30 days, check the attach rate (percentage of customers who added the cross-sell item), and replace low performers.
Cross-Sell vs Discount: The AOV Comparison
A 10% sitewide discount on a £50 AOV store reduces revenue per order by £5. An effective cross-sell that adds a £20 item to 15% of orders increases revenue per 100 orders by £300. Cross-selling at full margin beats discounting in almost every scenario. Use discounts for acquisition; use cross-sells for AOV growth.
