Google Ads for Shopify: The Highest-Intent Paid Channel

Google Ads captures demand — people actively searching for your products or related solutions. Unlike Meta or TikTok which interrupt people who aren’t looking, Google Ads appear when buyers are explicitly searching. This intent difference means Google Ads often achieve higher ROAS than Meta for direct-response campaigns, especially for stores selling products with clear search demand. The tradeoff: higher CPC than social ads, and more complex setup.

Conversion Tracking: Do This First

Never run Google Ads without conversion tracking. Setup: Google Ads → Tools → Conversions → New conversion action → Website → purchase. Copy the conversion tag and install via Google Tag Manager on Shopify (add GTM container via Online Store → Preferences → Google Analytics or GTM field). Verify conversion tracking is firing correctly using Tag Assistant before spending any budget. Without this, Google’s algorithm can’t optimise and you can’t measure ROI.

Campaign Types for Shopify Stores

  • Performance Max — Google’s AI manages all placements (Search, Shopping, Display, YouTube, Gmail). Provides most of your Google ads revenue at scale. Requires conversion data to work well. Start here once you have 50+ conversions/month
  • Standard Shopping — product listing ads in Google Search and Shopping tab. More control than PMax over product groups and bids. Good starting point before you have PMax data
  • Search campaigns — text ads for specific keywords. Best for brand terms, competitor terms, and high-intent specific searches (“buy [product] UK”)
  • Display retargeting — banner ads to website visitors across Google Display Network. Low CPC, reinforces brand. Set frequency caps

Keyword Strategy for Shopping Stores

  • Brand terms — your brand name. Low CPC, high conversion. Always run these (your competitors may be bidding on your brand)
  • Product-specific terms — “[product name] buy” or “[product name] UK”. High intent, mid CPC
  • Category terms — “men’s running shoes” or “organic skincare UK”. Broader reach, lower intent, needs strong ROAS management
  • Competitor terms — bidding on competitor brand names. High CPC, requires compelling ad copy and offer

Bidding Strategy Progression

  • New campaigns: Maximise Clicks — build impression and click data
  • After 30–50 conversions: switch to Maximise Conversions
  • After 100+ conversions: Target ROAS — set based on your actual margin
  • Never set Target ROAS too aggressively early — the algorithm needs room to learn
