What a Loyalty Programme Actually Does for a Shopify Store
A loyalty programme changes buying behaviour in two measurable ways. First, it increases purchase frequency — customers earn points and return to spend them, creating a habitual relationship with your store. Second, it increases spend per order — when customers are close to a reward threshold, they add items to their basket to reach it. Collectively, loyalty members typically spend 2–3x more per year than non-members. For a Shopify store doing £100,000 in annual revenue, converting 30% of customers to active loyalty members can add £20,000–£40,000 in incremental revenue with zero additional acquisition spend.
Choosing a Loyalty App
Smile.io is the most widely used loyalty app on Shopify. The free plan supports points for purchases, referrals, and birthdays with a basic loyalty page. Paid plans add tiers (Bronze, Silver, Gold), expiry dates, and deeper Klaviyo integration. LoyaltyLion is preferred for stores with more complex requirements — custom earning actions, Klaviyo segmentation by points balance, and API access. Yotpo Loyalty integrates with Yotpo Reviews for a combined reviews + loyalty experience in one app.
Structuring Your Points Earn Rate
The earn rate determines how quickly customers can reach rewards. Too slow and customers forget the programme exists. Too fast and you are giving away margin. A common benchmark: 1 point per £1 spent, redeemable at 100 points = £1 discount (1% back on spend). This is enough to be visible but low enough to protect margins. Supplement purchase points with non-purchase earning: 50 points for leaving a review, 100 points for referring a friend, 200 points for a social share. These bonus earn actions drive behaviours that benefit your store independently of the discount cost.
Tiered Programmes
Tiers add aspirational progression: Bronze (0–499 points), Silver (500–1,499 points), Gold (1,500+ points). Each tier unlocks better earn rates or exclusive benefits. Tiers are powerful because they make leaving the programme psychologically costly — a Gold member who has accumulated status is much less likely to switch to a competitor than a non-member. Design tiers so that reaching Silver requires the equivalent of 2–3 purchases, and Gold requires the equivalent of 5+ purchases. These thresholds convert regular buyers to highly loyal buyers.
Communicating the Programme
Display the loyalty widget on every page (usually bottom-left via the Smile.io floating widget). Show points balance to logged-in customers in the header or account page. Send a “You’re this close to a reward” email when a customer reaches 80% of their next reward threshold — this single email typically converts at 8–12%. Include the customer’s points balance in all transactional emails (order confirmations, shipping notifications) as a reminder that they are accumulating value.
Referral Component
Every loyalty programme should include a referral component. Smile.io’s referral feature gives the referring customer points for each successful referral and gives the new customer a discount on their first order. The economics: you acquire a new customer at a discount (cost you bear) but the referring customer earns points (marginal cost to you, high value to them). Referred customers convert at 5x the rate of cold traffic and have higher LTV — the best acquisition you can run.
