Technical SEO Is the Foundation Everything Else Builds On
You can publish the best content in your niche and earn hundreds of backlinks — but if Google can’t properly crawl, index, and understand your Shopify store, none of that effort pays off. Technical SEO removes the roadblocks that prevent rankings. This checklist covers every technical issue Shopify stores commonly face.
1. Crawlability Audit
- ✅ Robots.txt — check at yourdomain.com/robots.txt. Shopify’s default allows Google to crawl everything except /admin, /cart, /checkout. Verify no important collections or product pages are accidentally blocked.
- ✅ XML sitemap — check at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml. Shopify auto-generates this. Verify it’s submitted to Google Search Console and contains all key pages.
- ✅ No critical noindex tags — search Shopify theme files for noindex to find any hardcoded directives blocking pages.
- ✅ Crawl depth — all important pages should be reachable within 3 clicks from the homepage.
2. Duplicate Content Issues
- ✅ Product variant URLs — Shopify creates ?variant=123 URLs for product variants. Ensure canonical tags point back to the main product URL.
- ✅ Collection product duplication — products in multiple collections create /collections/all/products/slug AND /collections/shirts/products/slug URLs. Shopify auto-canonicalises to /products/slug — verify this is working.
- ✅ Pagination — collection page 2+ should not have duplicate titles/descriptions. Verify page 2 meta title differs from page 1.
- ✅ www vs non-www — ensure one version redirects to the other. Shopify handles this but double-check your DNS settings.
3. Page Speed
- ✅ Google PageSpeed Insights score — aim for 70+ on mobile, 85+ on desktop
- ✅ Core Web Vitals — LCP <2.5s, INP <200ms, CLS <0.1
- ✅ Image compression — all product images under 200KB, use WebP format
- ✅ App bloat — every Shopify app adds JavaScript to your storefront. Audit and remove unused apps. Apps alone can add 2–4 seconds to page load.
- ✅ Theme performance — run a Lighthouse audit. Heavy themes with many features loaded on every page are a common speed killer.
4. HTTPS and Security
- ✅ SSL certificate — all Shopify stores get a free SSL certificate. Verify by checking the padlock in browser.
- ✅ HTTP to HTTPS redirects — all HTTP URLs should 301-redirect to HTTPS. Shopify handles this automatically.
- ✅ No mixed content — HTTPS pages that load HTTP resources (images, scripts) trigger browser warnings. Check with Chrome DevTools Console.
5. Schema Markup Validation
- ✅ Product schema — validate with Google’s Rich Results Test. Check for: name, price, currency, availability, brand, aggregateRating
- ✅ BreadcrumbList schema — enables breadcrumb display in search results
- ✅ Organization schema — on homepage, name, URL, logo, sameAs (social profiles)
- ✅ No schema errors — check Google Search Console → Enhancements for any schema errors causing rich snippets to be suppressed
6. Mobile Optimisation
- ✅ Mobile-responsive theme — all Shopify themes are responsive but custom CSS can break mobile layouts
- ✅ Touch targets — buttons minimum 48×48px with adequate spacing
- ✅ Font size — minimum 16px body text to avoid zoom triggering on mobile
- ✅ No horizontal scroll — test on real mobile devices, not just browser dev tools
7. Redirect Audit
- ✅ No redirect chains — A → B → C should be replaced with A → C. Chains lose link equity at each hop.
- ✅ All product deletions have redirects — deleted products without redirects create 404s that waste crawl budget and lose backlinks
- ✅ URL changes have 301s — any URL change without a 301 redirect loses all ranking signals
