Video Is the Highest-Engagement Content Format in Ecommerce
Product pages with video convert at 80% higher rates than pages without video (Animoto data). Video demonstrates products in ways static images can’t — scale, texture, movement, context. On social media, video generates 3x more engagement than static content and 12x more shares. For Shopify stores, video is no longer an optional enhancement — it’s table stakes for competing with brand-savvy competitors who are already producing content.
Product Page Videos
- 360-degree product view — 15–30 second video rotating the product. Replaces the physical “turn it over and examine it” behaviour
- In-use demonstration — show the product being used in context. Especially valuable for: clothing (how does it move/drape), tech (how does it work), food (how does it look ready to serve), home goods (how does it look installed)
- Scale video — show product next to common objects or in someone’s hand. Eliminates size uncertainty, top cause of returns
- Unboxing — especially for gift-oriented or premium products. Shows the full experience, including packaging
Social Media Video Strategy
- TikTok/Reels (15–60 seconds) — fast-paced, trend-responsive, native platform feel. Hook in first 2 seconds. Product reveal, before/after, “POV: you just received…” formats
- YouTube (2–10 minutes) — in-depth tutorials, product reviews, comparison videos. Ranks in Google Search — high-intent traffic from video SEO
- Instagram Stories (up to 15 seconds) — behind the scenes, flash sale announcements, poll/question stickers for engagement
- Facebook Video — longer-form works here, especially for older demographics. Product explanation and brand story formats
Video Production Without a Big Budget
iPhone 14+ shoots 4K video more than sufficient for social and product pages. Essentials: a tripod (£20–£50), a ring light or natural light window, and a clean background (white wall, coloured backdrop, or relevant lifestyle setting). Edit with: CapCut (free, excellent for TikTok-style content), DaVinci Resolve (free, professional-grade), or Adobe Premiere (subscription). Consistent natural lighting and steady camera movement matter more than expensive equipment.
Adding Video to Shopify Product Pages
Shopify natively supports video in the product media gallery — upload as .mp4 or add a YouTube/Vimeo embed. Place video as the first media item in the gallery so it appears prominently. Keep product videos under 60 seconds — they autoplay silently in the gallery and should work without sound. Add captions or on-screen text for sound-off viewing.
