Why Product Page SEO Directly Impacts Revenue
Product pages are where Shopify sales happen — they’re also the pages that should rank for high-commercial-intent keywords. A product page ranking on page one for “buy [product name] UK” drives free, purchase-ready traffic every day. But most Shopify stores have product pages that are technically indexable but optimised for nothing in particular.
The 8 Elements of a Well-Optimised Shopify Product Page
1. SEO Title Tag
The title tag is the blue clickable text in Google search results. Formula: [Primary Keyword] — [Brand Name] | [USP]. Example: “Organic Cotton Baby Sleepsuit — LittleLeaf | Free UK Delivery.” Keep under 60 characters. Include the keyword at the beginning for maximum weight.
2. Meta Description
The meta description appears below your title tag. It doesn’t directly affect rankings but dramatically affects click-through rate. Write 140–155 characters that include the keyword, a key benefit, and a call to action. “Premium organic cotton baby sleepsuits. Soft, breathable, GOTS certified. Free UK delivery on orders over £30. Shop now.”
3. Product H1 Heading
Your product title becomes the H1. Make it descriptive and keyword-rich: “Organic Cotton Baby Sleepsuit — White” is better than just “Baby Sleepsuit” which tells Google nothing about the specifics. One H1 per page — never more.
4. Unique Product Description
Never use manufacturer descriptions — they’re duplicated across hundreds of stores. Write unique copy that answers buyer questions, includes the primary keyword naturally (2–4 times), and incorporates related terms. Minimum 300 words for competitive categories; 500+ words for high-value products. Cover: what it is, who it’s for, key features, materials/ingredients, dimensions, care instructions.
5. Image Optimisation
Every product image needs: a descriptive filename (organic-cotton-baby-sleepsuit-white.jpg, not DSC_4721.jpg), alt text describing the image with the keyword included naturally, and compression to under 100KB where possible. WebP format is preferred — Shopify now supports it natively.
6. Product Schema Markup
Schema markup tells Google exactly what your page is about and enables rich snippets (star ratings, price, availability in search results). Shopify automatically adds basic Product schema but you should verify it includes: name, description, image, price, priceCurrency, availability, and aggregateRating (once you have reviews). Use Google’s Rich Results Test to validate.
7. Internal Links From Product Pages
Link to related products (“You might also like”), the parent collection page, and relevant blog posts from product pages. Internal links distribute link equity through your site and help Google understand your site structure. The collection page link is particularly important — it ensures Google can find and crawl your collection from product pages.
8. URL Structure
Shopify sets product URLs as /products/[handle]. The handle should be short and keyword-rich: /products/organic-cotton-baby-sleepsuit-white. Avoid long, underscore-separated, or parameter-heavy URLs. Never change product URLs after you’ve ranked if you must, always set up a 301 redirect.
Common Shopify Product Page SEO Mistakes
- Duplicate content from product variants (Shopify creates separate URLs for colour/size variants — ensure canonical tags point to the main product URL)
- Thin descriptions on products with many variants (each variant page should have unique content)
- Missing reviews (review schema can increase CTR by 15–30% via star ratings in results)
- Ignoring page speed (large, uncompressed product images are the number one culprit)
